The problem that I overcame for this project was setting a limitation and creating a piece that obeyed the limits. For this project I chose to use monopoly money as my limitation. I had to create a piece that was made out of these 4 inch dollar bills . In the very beginning it was hard to establish exactly what I was going to make but I eventually thought of an idea that I liked. The limitation of using only monopoly money created several obstacles including creating an idea, after the idea phase it was the actual process that gave me the most trouble . I decided that I wanted to create a stencil of the monopoly man using the money as a background. The obstacles I had the most trouble crossing was the process and picturing the end result. I knew what I had to do it was just hard picturing what it would look like.
Did you consider how ideas would work before you tried them? Yes and no. I considered how the money would play a role in the overall art by rearranging them to see which options looked best, but with other parts I didn't. I didn't consider how to stencil would look on top of the money, I took a risk hoping it would turn out looking nice without testing the waters. I think this is what makes art so interesting. I was able to take risks and play it safe to create an interesting piece of art while working through the limitation I set for myself. During this unit my art class explored the terms/meaning of stealing, copying and being inspired. In my opinion copying is okay. some of the best artist copied other styles from other people and called it their own. There is a fine line between copying and stealing though. Copying part of an artists artwork is fine, but taking the exact same pieces of someones art and replicating without changing anything isn't okay. before completing this project I would have said copying isn't okay but I learned the appropriate way to copy an artists art. This unit has taught me that copying isn't all that bad as long as you're doing it the right way. The character remix project was a project I completed where we would chose an animated character and change something about them that might change the meaning of the art/character. For this project I chose to change Elsa from frozen and make her African-American completed with common African-American traits including darker eyes, hair and skin color. I also changed the color of her dress and accessories to a pinkish color to compliment her darker features. For my final project I chose the burger king logo to copy/steal from. On this project I chose to change the burger king part of the art to "queen bre" and their old slogan "have it your way" to "have it my way". By doing all this I changed the merit of the art to mean something completely different. The value in this piece is that the world revolves around me and their are no exceptions; In comparison to burger king always pleasing their customers by allowing them to have it their way whenever they order food. by breanna AndreaThe medium I used was something I've never worked with before, which called for an interesting experience. The medium I used was gum and normally I would opt to paint something on a canvas that I could observe, but this time around I went on an alternate route.
Since I was working with gum everything that I did was new/different for me. I organized the gum in a way that was different having some pieces in their wrappers and others outside. I also used different types of gum shapes, colors and sizes which created contrast. The only familiar part of my project was the background because I used acrylic paints to create a base color that would allow the gum to pop! I'm very happy with the way my project turned out. I'm happy and equally as surprised that I can create interesting works of art while going outside my comfort zone. Looking back I wouldn't change anything. I liked the idea that I was able to not plan this project as much as I would previous ones and have it still turn out amazing. I just went with what looked nice, rather than mapping out where the gum was going because it changed based on what I thought looked good in that moment.
